Once you wash one section of your car with your wash mitt you take it and put it in your clean water bucket, as you do this small dirt particles will fall into your bucket. This is where the grit guard comes in, it ensures that the dirt falls to the bottom of the bucket and as you continuously use the clean water the dirt particles won't come up and become lodged in your wash mitt in turn preventing you from scratching your cars surface. If you were to accidentally drop your wash mitt into the clean water bucket the grit guard won't let the mitt fall to the bottom and collect the dirt.
